**This piece is inspired by the Indie Free Spirit Team challenge, "Who do you think you are?" This is an ode to my heritage.** CLICK HERE TO VOTE

INTRO: I have learned so much more than I thought I would during this challenge. It's been a lot of fun! I'll share with you the process, the meaning behind my piece and some cool facts I've learned along the way.

STARDUST:

*I would like to begin with the star significance that this piece has.
Scientific research has shown that we all originated form stardust, that's just awesome! So a proper beginning would be to start with where we all spawned from: a star!
Not only that, but it signifies that we all have the potential to be a super star in our own lives. We have the ability to reach and impact others, and to shine brightly.
So, fallow the star in your heart and use your talents to impact those close and far!

THE WEB:

*Next I would like to talk about the inner web of this piece. To me it signifies how we are all intertwined in a DNA web, connecting us. It's mind blowing how far back you can search and will find ancestors from all over the globe. It's a web that connects the human race.

NATIVE HERITAGE:

*I decided to make a dream catcher for this project, as in conjunction to other meaningful things, it shows a part of my Native American heritage.
My great grandfather was half Cherokee Indian, unfortunately he died the same year I was born. However, I've learned some native traditions through other family members.
It was one particular summer, 15 years ago (I was 13) when I was very interested in our native heritage and I began making dream catchers.
That summer I visited my great aunt in Arkansas. One day she saw me sitting on the porch making a small dream catcher.
"That will never work you know" she said.
"Well, why not?" I asked, returning the sass.
"You need to infuse your intent, you need to clear your mind. You can't think bad things or the person you give it to will have nightmares. You cant just think about anything, you have to meditate and do it right" she said.
And that's when I learned how to "really" make dream catchers and I've been making them that way ever since.
She showed me a huge 5 or 6 foot tall dream catcher that a medicine woman had made for her. It was non traditional, in the way that it did not use leather and sinew and all that typical "Native" stuff. It was made from willow branches, they were not covered and it was beautiful. That same dream catcher has inspired me ever since.
I've always felt very close to nature and the earth. I hope that shines through in this piece.

MEANING OF CHARMS:

*The butterfly in the dream catcher signifies birth, life, change and growth. The skeleton signifies death at the end of our earth cycle.

*The rosebud is an ode to my grandmother's side of the family, true gardeners and farmers with a love of plants and natural healing. They have taught me so much about plant life, it's not even funny!

*The shell signifies my love of water and how many of my ancestors lived by the water i.e: Scottish, English and Danish.
My grandmother loves to tell me the story of how water would always calm me down. When I would start crying as a wee-one, she would fill the sink with water and put my little feet in there. I would instantly stop crying. She said it worked like magic.

MORE CHARMS:

*Hanging from the dream catcher are more charms:

*An English crest, for my English Heritage.

*A wagon for my Euro-American ancestry, for the settlers which called this great country their home.

*I hand painted a viking ship on drift wood for my Danish heritage - they happened to be incredible craftsmen, making ornate ships, tools and jewelry.

*A shell which looks like a horn from a unicorn to represent my Scottish heritage - I found out that the unicorn is their national animal and almost did a back flip! That's so cool! By the way, Scotland has 787 Islands - wow!

*And a cowboy boot for my Southern roots.

THE PROCESS: This piece is very eco friendly. The wood is from a repurposed wreath.
To weave the web I used hemp cord in undyed and naturally dyed (black) hemp.
I also used many clear glass and stone beads!
For binding the wood together I used natural twine.
The beads are made of glass, wood and stone.
The rose is a natural, dried rosebud.
The Skeleton charm is made of clay.
The other charms are made of metal.
I hung feathers from the dream catcher and sprinkled some glitter in the middle of the web (a little faux star dust!).
This project took me 10 days to complete.
*It measures about 20" inches in width.

Raven Noir Takes Off

This rendition of our formerly KA "Practical Magic" Black Coal Soap, is gaining rapidly in popularity. We've added Wormwood, that special herb said to give Absinthe it's hallucinogenic qualities. Well, it's actually an anti-bacterial when applied topically, and of course it will not make you hallucinate!! We also updated the scent, it's resinous and unisex, earthy with a touch of floral. The main ingredient is the Black Coal, which draws out impurities and also lightens and brightens skin tone. I see an exciting future for our Little Raven Noir! Keep your eye on THIS one!

Rainbow Mittens

I know, I know, it's SUMMER time! But I couldn't help sharing my excitement over this etsy shop I found a few days ago. I stumbled upon this cute shop RAINBOW MITTENS, where the owner hand knits these mittens herself! They totally remind me of the mittens I wore as a kid in the 80's. The ones pictured above are called "HONEY RAINBOW" mittens, which is so suiting!

Hemp a Boo

I finally put a new batch of Hemp a Boo soap up in the SHOP!

Scented with all natural peppermint essential oil. Loaded full of skin softening Organic bamboo shoots & Organic hemp powder.
Top it all off with omega-loaded hemp and olive oil, and you have yourself one very skin nourishing bar. What gets me even more excited? Not only is it processed in an eco-friendly manner, it's packaged in 100% biodegradable packaging! It's vegan! It's orangutan safe - not meaning OK to use on orangutans, silly - by not using palm oil I keep from supporting the corruption of their habitat - now that really lights my fire, baby! Hopefully it lights yours too! While you're at it, check out the new soap stamp (movin' on up).

The lather is soft and frothy, equally suited for shaving. I would go so far as to say, you could even use this soap on your face! My husband does - he uses it for shaving and as a body & face soap. Now only if you could use it on your hair, you'd need no other soap. Alas, I don't recommend using it as a shampoo! (Solid shamp bars coming soon!)

There's nothing I love more than taking a nice cool shower with some peppermint soap, on a hot, muggy, summer day - or early in the morning, to wake myself up! Rejoice!

Friendship

My inspiration for this piece was, of course, friendship. In my mind, it was a story of two unlikely friends - two totally different people, that had bonded.
The execution was, acrylic, watercolor, ink, sparkles, fabric and even beeswax for texture.

I was happy to wake up this morning, and see a message from a fellow etsian, telling me she had put my art print up on her wonderful BLOG.
She uses her blog to feature fine art on etsy - I couldn't be happier!

Alice Cup Cake Necklace

Here's the last Alice Cup Cake necklace - I made 6 of these, so it's a limited edition!
The cupcakes are made of molding clay, the icing is blue with little sparkles! Atop is a cute brass crown, hanging from a brass chain.

Goodness I'm back!!

Here's a little antique shop in my new town in Coupeville, on the beautiful Whidbey Island WA - that's why I've changed to an Ocean themed background too!

So much has been going on!! I'll fill you in: my husband lost his job, we moved to a new state and after 6 months things are still in boxes!! We now live in a big old house, built in 1929 - cape cod style.

THE CARAVAN: I've finally put up more stuff in my shop, because I know you all have been missing it *wink-wink* - so don't be shy and take a looksy HERE! I've added a host of new rose rings, great for spring and summer, with new fun colors!
I'll be adding more art prints, as well - ASAP.

I'm almost done reading New Moon, 100 pages to go. I'm at the part where she takes off to Italy to save Edward.
What the hell is wrong with Bella? She's really pissing me off.
Has she not seen Jacob? Good lord girl, FORGET Edward.
As much as it is supposed to be a Romeo and Juliet story, any real life girl would get over Edward in a heartbeat to be with Jacob.
She's so selfish, she's constantly thinking about herself and I suppose Edward. Jacob saves her life and she doesn't even thank him. He's head over heels inlove with her and he doesn't even get a kiss for saving her life?
I want to slap her! Slap her in her little naive face.
I can't be the only one who feels this way!
Go Jacob, come over here and I'll give a kiss, poor guy!

I've heard the best form of flattery is when someone copies you (or something like that). But I must say I'm not totally flattered. I'm a little cranky about it. My whole point was to make interesting, unique items, that no one else had. Now my things are being copied, especially the Ouija Board Necklace and my Antique Pill Bottle Necklaces. To me it feels like my products have been cheapened. Not only do the copier's items not look as good (but are offered at cheaper prices), they also take away of some of the LITTLE business I do get. But that's the business, and when you have cool items that's what seems to happen so I'll just have to take it with a grain of salt...

Color of the month

I go through little color obsessions! For December it was deep red. I think I skipped January, and all this month I've been goo-goo for eggplant purple. I already have a new obsession for March, but I'll leave that a secret for a bit longer.

So for eggplant I've found this wonderful retro 40's inspired dress from Stop Staring (stopstaringclothing.com). I had to buy it and will post pictures of me wearing it later this month, to my myspace page.

Baby Girl Boutique

I've just found the most amazing place to shop!
I'm so excited because I like practically everything on the site, and that rarely ever happens to me.
Shopping for clothes is usually about as fun as going to the dentist.
Part of that is because I have a very classic curvy body that most modern clothes are not made for.
But guess what? All these clothes (in the right size of course) will fit my chest, waist and hips! Yay! (hips are the hardest thing for me to find the right fit for).

So check it out all you curvy ladys and we'll curve it up together, thank Lord!

Balloon Pilot

This necklace was made using a real antique Balloon Pilot stamping from WWII.
I made wholes in the brass stamping so I could attach the mini brass crown and aged brass chain.
To me it has a real Steampunk vibe, especially since it's all brass.
These stamping are very limited so I'm not sure how many I'll be able to get if this one sells.

These great sheets are from etsy seller: SweetMemoriesQuilts! I went cheap and bought mine at target, but now that I know how great bamboo sheets are I would for sure splurge on a nice set!
Not only is bamboo great for the environment since it is easily biodegradable and a sustainable resource and renewable bacause it grows so fast, but the fabric is also unbelievably soft!
I had the best sleep because it also regulates heat and is breathable. I never got hot and I never got cold!
I'm a fan forever now! So make the good karma flow in your room and use bamboo sheets!

Edgar Allan Shows up for winter

I just Added this Lovely Edgar Allan Poe necklace to the shop for winter 2008/2009.

Edgar Allan Poe is magnified and set in a Victorian style antique silver finish setting. Hung from a soft black velvet cord.
The closure is adjustable so you can make it longer and features a silver crown dangling from chain. The pendant including setting measures: 2.4" (5.7 cm) long. The cord hangs 9" to 10" 23 to 25.5 cm) long.

Meet Cherriepie

I would Like to introduce you all the The Caravan's new baby cakes; Cherriepie.!

She's been constructed from vintage toy parts and has had her very own photo shoot! She will be appearing in this winters (2008/2009) Oddities Collection Coming Soon at www.TheCaravan.etsy.com . She'll have her own jewelry, cards, soap and even perfume.

She's very sweet and tiny, measuring only 3.5" inches tall, with a wingspan of 4" inches .
Being one third, human, deer and bat, she enjoys playing in the forest and eating any delicious fruits and berries she can get her, urrrrm, hooves on.
She flies from place to place, mostly napping during the day and seeking out new adventures at night.
She loves to play but is very shy! Mostly she keeps to herself, up in the large oak trees, but will gladly befriend her share of squirrels and other small critters, although birds are usually not nice to her!
